We sent seven wrestlers to the Albany Varsity Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Albany HS. Thirty-one NCS, CCS, Northern, and Sac-Joaquin section schools competed. Five Lowell wrestlers placed and four medaled with Lowell finishing seventh in the team standings despite missing several wrestlers from our line-up.
We had great performances by all our wrestlers,. The highlight was Pryor Vo (senior) who powered his way through to the championship match with pins against Scotts Valley, De La Salle, and a tech fall over San Ramon Valley. He then went on to dominating 8-0 major decision over Terra Linda in his championship match.
Placing for Lowell were:
Pryor Vo (senior) – 1st place at 132 lbs
Aldren Pasol (junior) – 4th place at 106 lbs
Sasha Gonzalez (junior) – 4th place at 113 lbs
Rubin Girling (senior) – 6th place at 160 lbs
Derek Yi (senior) – 8th place at 195 lbs.
Also wrestling well were Herman Zeng (sophomore) at 120 lbs and Kelvin Mai (senior) at 126 lbs.
This is the sixth varsity tournament we have competed in so far this season. We have medaled wrestlers at every single one of those tournaments and shown the Bay Area and NorCal that we have a team and individuals who can compete with and defeat wrestlers from all over Northern California…not just San Francisco. We have been training hard for over three months to get where we are today with still more hard work and competitions to go to prepare our wrestlers for a shot at competing at the toughest high school state wrestling championships in the country…and hopefully beating people there too.
