Saturday, Jan. 18 was chock full of wrestling competition for Lowell. We sent 13 wrestlers to three different tournaments (varsity, JV, and girls) and came home with eight medals and ten wrestlers placing.
Chris Snowden Memorial – varsity
29 schools from all over northern California and one Nevada power competed. Six of seven Lowell wrestlers placed with four Lowell wrestlers medaling:
Pryor Vo (senior) – took 2nd place at 132 lbs
Rostyslav Tolochko (senior) – took 2nd place at 285 lbs
Sasha Gonzales (junior) – took 3rd place at 113 lbs
Rubin Girling (senior) – 4th place at 160 lbs
Kelvin Mai (senior) – 7th place at 126 lbs
Anthony Huang (senior) 7th place at 152 lbs
There were some very good wrestling by Lowell. Pryor Vo went 3-1 losing only to the Nevada state champion. Rostyslav avenged an earlier tournament loss to an NCS top-ranked heavyweight with a dominating first period pin. Sasha Gonzales had an exciting come-from-behind semi-final match which he came just short of winning in quadruple overtime. Kelvin Mai lost his first match to the #1 seed and eventual tournament champion but fought his way back with four wins in a row in consolation. Anthony Huang and Rubin Girling also wrestled well in consolation to place.
Terra Nova Lady Tiger Invitational
We sent our lone female wrestler to the Terra Nova Lady Tiger Invitational at Terra Nova HS. Cynthia lost a very close first match to a tough Northern Section wrestler only to come back and win all her subsequent matches and take third. In the process she defeated two CCS wrestlers. She is now 4-0 against CCS wrestlers, which is a good sign heading into the CCS state qualifier.
Albany JV Invitational
Cris Sanchez (junior) went undefeated taking 1st place at 182 lbs. Freshmen Kian Mojabi (113 lbs) and Will Fuchs (126 lbs) took fourth place.
Lots of wrestling this week-end but still lots more to go. Next up we will have a section dual meet at Mission on Wednesday, Jan. 22 followed by Saturday Jan. 25 varsity and JV tournaments at Albany HS and Oceana HS.
