Lowell Defeats Mission 51-24

Lowell had its second sectional wrestling dual meet this afternoon at Mission winning it 51-24.

Although Mission generally doesn’t have the numbers to fill all weight classes resulting in forfeit points for us…they always have some tough wrestlers in the weight classes they do have. It was important to us to win the meet on matches actually wrestled (which we did 15-13) as well as overall.

One of the marquis match-ups was at 113 lbs where Manuel Varguez (senior) faced the reigning section champion and one of the two best wrestlers on their team. In an exciting match which went the entire six minutes, Manuel trailed 1-4 with less then 30 seconds left when he exploded a takedown followed by three near fall points to win 6-4.

We also were able to get eight JV and girls matches. Our JV and girls did a bang-up job with seven wins by pin (four first period pins) and only one loss.

Next up for our wrestlers will be this Saturday when our varsity competes at the Lawrence Miller Memorial tournament at Alhambra HS in Martinez and the JV and girls teams are at the Mark Lance Invitational at College Park HS in Pleasant Hill.
