(Sasha Gonzalez hits a sick foot sweep against Galileo)
In a close dual meet, Lowell fell just four points short of Galileo in a 36-40 loss on Thursday, Jan. 15.
This season’s varsity squad fills just 10 of 14 weight classes, so we always know we are giving up 24 forfeit points out of the gate. Tonight, we had nine in the line-up, as one of our wrestlers is out with an injury for the next 1-2 weeks. Therefore, we were down 0-30 before we even started wrestling.
Galileo always has a full squad (all 14 weight classes filled), so we knew the nine Lowell wrestlers would need to win with what we had and score a lot of pins. Our wrestlers rose to the occasion and wrestled well winning 7 out of 9 matches including five pins. There’s no question that Lowell completely out wrestled Galileo, but the 30 point forfeit deficit was just a little too much to overcome.
Next up for Lowell is a busy Saturday with tournaments at Terra Nova (Girls), Albany (JV), and Drake (Varsity)
