Beset by temporary injuries to some key members of our varsity wrestling squad, we sent only three wrestlers from our varsity squad to the Mountain Clash varsity tournament at San Rafael HS on Saturday, Jan. 28. However, all three wrestlers had outstanding performances.
Taking 2nd place at 113 lbs was senior, Manuel Varguez. Manuel has had a fantastic season and has been the team standout in January…taking 1st place at two varsity tournaments; 2nd at this most recent one; and going undefeated in section dual meets…including a stunning win over his nemesis at Mission HS. Plus, his practice attendance has been perfect and he works hard in practice setting the example for others to follow.
Taking 4th place at 120 lbs. was junior, Lorenzo Pesino. Lorenzo wrestled five tough matches going 3-2 including one against the North Coast Section #1 ranked (as well as state-ranked) 120 lbs. wrestler. Lorenzo wrestled very aggressively never letting up on his offense. Even in his losses, he was constantly on the attack.
Taking 8th place at 126 lbs. was sophomore, Pryor Vo. Pryor wrestled four matches and went 2-2. Pryor’s losses were by close decision only. He wrestled very well and won one of his matches with a Peterson Roll to a pin with .5 seconds left in the period.
As you may know, high school wrestling teams consist of 14 weight classes. Team scoring in tournaments is calculated by win points each os a team’s 14 wrestler gains in a tournament. Taking that into consideration, Lowell put on an outstanding performance by taking 14th place out of 24 teams…when we had only about 1/5 of a team competing.
Great job, Lowell!
Next up will be a home (@ Lowell) dual meet on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 4:00 PM. This should be a good meet as Balboa has been wrestling tough…but so have we. Come support Lowell wrestling in the Lowell house!
