For the first time in 18 years (1996), Lowell Wrestling won the SF Section wrestling championships held Saturday, Feb. 22 at Lincoln HS. This comes a few days after closing our regular season undefeated in the section.
We had wrestlers in eleven out of fourteen weight classes. We were also without our undefeated 160lb wrestler, Rubin Girling, due to injury…so we knew we were going to have to get maximum wins and pins to overtake teams with a full roster competing. Our guys came out with all cylinders firing.
Coming into the finals round we were down nine points to reigning champions, Galileo. Both us and Galileo had seven guys in the finals. That meant we were going to have reach down within ourselves and settle things on the final field of battle with pins. We did just that winning four of seven finals matches (all by pin) overtaking Galileo for the team title.
All in all, we placed 10 of 11 wrestlers in the top three including: four 1st place, three 2nd place, and three 3rd place finishes.
Here are your Lowell placers:
Sasha Gonzales (junior) – 108lbs
Aldren Pasol (junior) – 115lbs
Pryor Vo (senior) – 134lbs
Rostyslav Tolochko (senior) – 287lbs
Anthony Huang (senior) – 147lbs
Cristian Sanchez (junior) – 184lbs
Derek Yi (senior) – 197lbs
Herman Zeng (sophomore) – 122lbs
Kevin Yang (senior) – 128lbs
Kelvin Mai (senior) – 140lbs
The champions of each weight class advance to the CIF State Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield, Calif. March 7-8. This is the hardest state wrestling championship in the country. To even win a single match there is very challenging. We welcome that challenge.
